This Week in the OK: Hitching a ride and dealing with insurance

Nice Saturday!

Black Press Media’s Josh Piercey got a rundown of the top headlines from across the Okanagan this week.

‘It’s ridiculous’: Salmon Arm man defies new rules for BC sales of private vehicles

Chris Lethbridge is opposing ICBC and the BC government after being told he owes sales tax based on an estimate of $11,000 on a used truck that cost him $2,100.

The Salmon Arm man said he bought the truck, a 2008 Dodge with about 300,000 miles on it, in a private sale in October.

“We made the deal at the insurance office and as soon as I made the deal, they said the truck is worth $11,000, you owe $11,000 in taxes…” Lethbridge said.

“I’m not paying about $1,300 in taxes on a vehicle that I paid $2,100 for. It is ridiculous.”

‘Gotta get out’: Revelstoke resident shares scary rental experience

Janine Arellano’s toxic experience renting a local rental unit left her fearful and angry, and permanently changed the way she approached renting.

Renting in Revelstoke is limited and expensive, making it competitive. A quick scan of the Revy Rentals Facebook page shows that there are more people looking for rentals in Revelstoke than there are rentals. Housing is not a new problem in the city. In fact, this was the biggest issue raised during the recent local elections and the previous councilor spent a significant amount of his time outlining how the Housing Action Plan could tackle Revelstoke’s housing crisis.

The rental landscape can put tenants in a precarious position. With the winter season fast approaching and more renters arriving, Arellano decided to share her story so others can learn and empower themselves to avoid the same harm.

Widow of Penticton man responds to $2,000 fine levied on driver who killed her husband

A $2,000 fine for driving a vehicle into oncoming traffic and killing a beloved Penticton husband, father and grandfather is a sign of a flawed legal system, Steve Dahnert’s widow said.

Carlie Dudych, 21, was fined $2,000 in Kelowna Provincial Court last week (Nov. 14) for crossing the double solid line on Highway 33 into oncoming traffic and hitting Dahnert’s motorcycle, which he drove on Thanksgiving Day 2020. Dahnert later died in hospital from injuries sustained in the accident.

According to Steve’s wife Tracy Dahnert, Dudych showed no emotion in the courtroom, even as he listened to very emotional statements about the victims and many in the courtroom cried.
