Viral photo of Highwaymen’s ultra-simple tour driver shocks the internet

Say what you will about The Highwaymen, but you can’t blame them for consuming too much caffeine.

A tweet by Ken Jennings went viral today, featuring an old tour driver for the Highwaymen, the country music supergroup made up of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson.

The mundane nature of their requests may surprise you:

Choosing the driver list from Cash, Jennings, Nelson and Kristofferson was simple but effective:

Johnny Cash

6 decaffeinated diet cokes
6 Coca-Cola classics
spring water
Coffee
Hot tea with honey and lemon
fruit
fruit juice

Waylon Jennings

6 decaffeinated diet cokes
6 Coca-Cola classics
spring water
Coffee
skim milk (for coffee)
fruit

Willy Nelson

6 Coca Cola on ice
6 7-Up on ice
spring water
Coffee
fruit

Kris Kristofferson

12 Diet Coca-Cola on ice
fruit juice
spring water
iced coffee
fruit

Looks like they could at least agree on adding the healthy option of fruit to their diet colas.

The four famous artists who formed country supergroup The Highwaymen from 1985 to 1995 seem to have made some pretty sensible requests for their dressing rooms. Twitter users couldn’t help but notice the excessive amount of Diet Coke requested, as well as multiple requests for “decaffeinated” Coke options.

I guess you don’t want to get too excited playing Highwaymen hits like “Born and Raised in Black and White” and “Desperados Waiting for a Train” for country fans.

We can only wonder if this was the actual list, or a lure list to throw potentially concerned event staffers off track of what the cast members actually filled their dressing rooms with. Knowing Willie Nelson, he most likely brought his own “stash” of what he needed.

The normality of the list could also be attributed to each member’s age during the time they toured together as the Highwaymen. The noisy backstage days might have lagged far behind the group members when compiling this list.

Still, Twitter had some other guesses as to why the list was so simple:

I assume these are codes for drugs

It took me a moment to imagine that these guys were drinking lots of soft drinks before it clicked that many of them were probably mixers

They all practiced BYOB

All I see is some blenders and side dishes.

I’m pretty sure these Cokes had some support from Kentucky and Tennessee.

Still, the picture offers a fun, unique look at four legendary country icons.

Tonight, pour out a decaffeinated Diet Coke to pay tribute to musical contributions from Johnny, Waylon, Willie and Kris.
