World Mobile has announced the successful launch of its commercial telecommunications network in Zanzibar. World Mobile’s official debut in East African territory means Zanzibaris can enjoy mobile data that is 50% cheaper than the country average.
The transition from a proof of concept to a commercial model was aided by the launch of World Mobile’s Android application on Google Play. The Android app simplifies data bundle management and provides users with a platform to create a self-managed identifier and use a variety of value-added services.

Demand for World Mobile’s affordable mobile data service is strong in Zanzibar, with 1,000 new subscribers per week and a peak of 16,000 daily users in May 2023. This is a significant achievement for the Tanzanian archipelago, which has a population of approximately 1.8 million .
The proof-of-concept network was initially deployed as a subsidized trial service available across World Mobile’s AirNodes network. Due to the limitations of existing providers, the semi-autonomous area was chosen as a pilot for World Mobile’s hybrid connectivity network. Internet penetration in Tanzania is around 46%, with access mainly concentrated in urban areas. These challenges have a negative economic impact as companies struggle to fully participate in the digital economy.
World Mobile hopes to successfully solve a problem that has caught the attention of tech giants like Google and Facebook, first by building a sharing economy that will fund the build-out of telecommunications infrastructure in rural Africa and beyond. World Mobile’s solution provides connectivity at a cost many times lower than traditional mobile network operators.
